Travelling to Jeju island:
From Seoul Gimpo airport there are multiple flights daily to Jeju and it only takes an hour. Comparing the different airlines I found Jeju air to be the cheapest. Also, they have a flight every hour so the timing can be very flexible depending on your budget. We picked a flight that departs at 11am and returns at 5:30pm (considered peak hours) and the tickets cost us SGD162 for each person.
Getting around Jeju:
To get around Jeju, you can either take the public bus, rent a car or hire a taxi driver. We opted to rent our own car for the flexibility of our schedule. Among the various car rental companies, it seems that KT Kumho is the cheapest. However, you need to register yourself as a member in order to view and get the discounted member price. Otherwise it is about the same price as renting from Hertz or Avis.
Once you've arrived at Jeju airport, look out for the KT Kumho counter and the staff will direct you to the shuttle bus pick up point. The car rental office is actually quite a distance from the airport and most companies provides free shuttle services between (interval 15min, travel time 15min).
One thing to note is that during your online reservation, you have to choose the pick up and drop off time of the car. They are very strict on the return time so I would suggest putting it at the latest possible to avoid paying for late return charges. I initially indicated the return time to be 430pm but because we only made it at 450pm we had to incur a late charge.
Another important thing if you are driving on your own is that the local GPS works by entering the phone numbers of the destination. So it is important to take down the numbers of the attractions and your accommodation! See appendix below for list of useful numbers.
Our itinerary:
After getting our car, first stop was to fill our stomachs!
Black pork is a local specialty of Jeju and there is an entire street dedicated to black pork restaurants!
After filling our tummy we decided to drop by Mysterious Road. It is actually a road that seems to be going up slope but is actually sloping down. Personally we found it a little over-hyped. There were groups of tourist at the single lane road trying to see their water bottles roll "upwards". However, we noticed that the illusion only works if you look ahead. Once you look sideways you can tell it is actually going down slope.
Next we moved on to the o'sulloc green tea museum.
After this we drove to our guesthouse in seogwipo and visited 2 waterfalls near the area: Jeongbang and Cheonjiyeon falls.
Since we are on an island we thought of having some fresh seafood for dinner. We learned it the hard way that korean sashimi set is an acquired taste. We were somehow convinced by the restaurant owner that we should got for the 2 person sashimi set that other korean couples are having.
End result: my travel buddy had diarrhea the next day and I swore to stick to japanese sashimi next time.
Where we stayed:
Jeju bada wi olle guesthouse is a 3-storeys building run by an old couple with their pet shiba inu. Since yours truly is a sucker for traditions, I booked us a korean style room despite them having western style rooms with proper beds. However, we didn't expect the korean style floor mat to be very different and much thinner than japanese futons. After one night of sleep (or lack of) I had bruises on my hip and a backache. Hence we requested for an additional set of bedding to stack them up to make it more comfortable.
